The Yongsan Garrison is scheduled to close in a couple of years, marking the closure of one chapter in US-Korea military history. The US military forces have been stationed here since 1945. Over 70 years of use of this piece of land in the middle of Seoul, there has been much change. But there is also much that remains from history. The Yongsan garrison served as the HQs for the Imperial Japanese Army & Governor General’s residence up until August 1945, leaving behind lots of historical traces. Now Yongsan Garrison is being planned to relocate to Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtak in a couple of years. Therefore, it is the perfect excuse to look back on the history of this significant place and share with people. For me, the history of Yongsan Garrison is the history of modern Korea. It is my wish to preserve the natural and cultural resources in the context of wider Korean history.
