As a youngster, I didn’t appreciate nature much, but that changed when I grew older. I began to see that Yongsan Garrison is home to a massive collection of trees and plants. The cherry blossom trees in particular grabbed my attention and became a favorite of mine. Every spring, I would see them scattered all over Main and South Post (and off the installation). In Seoul, many would go to Yeouido to see the blossoms annually, but I preferred to do my sighting along the 1st Corps Boulevard which was lined with many cherry blossom trees. Since my college years, I’d try to head over to this street every spring to enjoy the sights.
In April 2018, I had a feeling it was going to be my last time seeing them as with the base beginning to close down then. I went there with my cellphone and captured some the final shots.
Throughout the years, many people would stop by this street. Whether it was on their way to the Townhouse, Bowling Alley, MP Station, or to head towards Samgakji or Namyeong-dong, many drove or walk through these cherry blossom covered street. Along with the schools, this is the one area I will miss in Yongsan the most. I can only hope that these trees will be kept around for Seoulites to enjoy them in the future.
